2023 MM Final

Both lads happy to be in the Final shooting for another Major!

A pretty perfect Summer’s day at Tasmania GC. Both Leighs on daily hcp of 16 and looking to play HOT GOLF!

After a few chips and putts on the practice green it was time to get into it. Maybe should’ve hit some range balls first judging by their drives! Way right x 2. Remember the course layout has changed so we were starting on the old 10th hole.

Hole 1

Not pretty – other than Leroy’s great third out of the sand onto the front of the green but he had a tough putt over the mound on the right from there. Tied in doubles.

Hole 2

Into a 1-2 club wind Cravo finds the green and Leroy finds the cart path. Dead behind a tree, but that’s a free drop with that infrastructure there. Cravo makes his par and Leroy in for bogey. Cravo 1up

Hole 3

Cravo scored a direct runout on the full on a dead tree left of the fairway on the par 5 and Leroy was just a bit back in the sand. Leroy played a great up and over to a great layup spot and Cravo a nice bounce out of the left rough into a great layup too. Leroy nice shot but front greenside bunker. Cravo nice shot middle of the green. Great bunker shot from Leroy to about 6ft but can’t match Cravo’s par. Cravo 2up

Hole 4 (the short par 4 – old 15th hole)

Cravo toes a 5 iron and it bounces right rough. Leroy draws a driver in there too. A couple of easy bogeys but we were not sure whether to call Cravo’s pitch shot good or lucky as it looked like bunker but cleared it, caught a downslope and finished pin high.

Hole 5

Both Gents hit the fairway here with great drives – Cravo 300m down the hill. Both got it down to nice spots for their third shots (Leroy using 5 wood, Cravo with 7 iron) but Cravo unlucky in a sandy divot in the fairway 100m out from the green. Leroy hit his third with great contact but turned it over by the next tee box and Cravo’s landed on the fringe and hopped away left. Leroy hit an AMAZING flop shot here but hadn’t surveyed the green complex prior so was further left then necessary. Three putts from there hurt as Cravo snuck another win with his bogey. Cravo 3up

Hole 6

Cravo pures a 4 iron up to the corner and Leroy flips one too hard into the right trees but sits ok – only issue is the distance. Cravo par too good on this hole. Cravo 4up

Hole 7 (old 13th par 4 up the hill)

Cravo smashes a driver way up the hill and Leroy turns another one over in the trees right. But taking inspiration from their current favourite YouTuber “Golf Sidekick” Leroy takes a high lofted club and advances one nicely to the middle of the fairway 100m out leaving an easy third shot in. Unfortunately that play, whilst sensible, did not pay off on this occasion as Cravo hit an awesome 8 iron 155m to the back pin and holed his birdie. Cravo 5up

Hole 8 (old short par 5)

Cravo blasts driver 265 down the left side of the fairway and Leroy is in the left trees. A lucky escape for Leroy with his next weaving through branches to end up nicely in the fairway 145m out. Cravo has 6 iron from 180m down the hill but pulls it waaaay left and (hopefully!) lost. His reload 6 iron is the high draw over the pin to green middle that he was going for first time! Leroy flirts with the bunker for his approach but covers it to the fringe. Takes three more from there and the hole is tied in bogeys.

Hole 9 (old par 3 18th hole)

Leroy hits a carpet burner straight up the fairway. Cravo smashes 7 iron straight at the pin but ends up on the top tier and the pin is bottom. Bogey for Cravo but double for Leroy. Cravo 6up. Leroy in need of the kind of comeback he produced vs TJ in last year’s round robins.

Hole 10 (now we’re on the old front nine)

Both boys in the trees right. Leroy impressively plays some golf jenga removing a huge branch that his ball was nestled against without any ball movement. Cravo whacks AW onto the back half of the green and Leroy tops his. Leroy’s next is mint and just off the front near the extreme front pin. Bogeys is a halved hole.

Hole 11

Two bad drives here and Cravo’s bogey is a winner after Leroy has a three putt. Cravo 7up and dormie

Hole 12

The par five is bathed in pretty afternoon light and both lads are on the fairway with their drives. Leroy a little skinny with his second. Cravo lovely draw 6 iron to about 100m out. Leroy has 200m to go and lays up as well. Cravo AW lands pin high and runs about 15ft past. Leroy’s pitch is even better and scares the hole as it goes past. Leroy another three putt however and Cravo bins the birdie to win the match 8&6.

Leroy just had one of those days where he got punished for small errors and ran into an opponent who was playing great. Not much you can do about that!

Thanks for a great day out Leroy! And we’re both moving up in the World Rankings 😉
